Recipe: Spirulina & Cacao energy balls

As the importance of cutting down, or even giving up sugar entirely becomes more mainstream, so many wonderful alternative recipes for sweet treats are springing up all over the place! And as this wave came after the gluten-free and diary free demands most recipes also adhere to these principles too. So now we’re finding alternatives that really are guilt-free and better for your health, and for me, they really are more satisfying. I don’t view them as a sacrificial replacement, but a preferential alternative. So, I have been experimenting with all kinds of recipes, tweaking them to the ingredients I like and can buy in my local area. Below is my recipe for energy balls; full of protein, carbs and good fats that will keep you satieated with good clean energy. I recently added some Organic Burst spirulina to the recipe just to make them even more potent!

100g of Cashews (milled in my nutri-bullet)

100g of Ground almonds

3 tbs Coconut oil

3 tbs Raw cacao

1 tsp Maca powder

1 tbs Spirulina

1 handful of chopped medjool dates

1tbs organic dessicated coconut

Pinch of salt

Good sprinkle of cinnamon

Toppings: Flax seed, dessicated coconut, chia seeds, raw cacao.


Gently melt the coconut oil to a liquid.

Place the cashews, almonds and dates in a food processor and blitz

Add the rest of the ingredients and then pour over the melted coconut oil.

Mix together well and roll into balls.

Gently roll the balls in the toppings until the pieces stick.

Place in the fridge to harden overnight.

I have eaten them after my morning smoothie to give me a boost until lunchtime, or have them as your crucial 3pm pick-me-up to stop you reaching for the biscuits and cake. I have found that the magnesium in the raw cacao actually helps prevent my sweet cravings, which is a bonus!
